Notes from Mike's Desk for the Week of April 4 - April 8, 2022

Hello, friends. Welcome back to my newsletter highlighting what's happening on Capitol Hill and in Louisiana's 4th Congressional District. Thank you for subscribing and please consider recommending this resource to a friend.

IN THE HOUSE

Thursday afternoon, the House exercised some necessary bipartisanship. By overwhelming majorities, we voted to suspend normal trade relations with Russia and Belarus and to completely suspend energy imports from Russia. Alongside the recent U.S. shipment of weapons and aid to Ukraine, these moves will further cripple both Vladimir Putin's economy and war machine.

Also in the House this week, I attended two important committee hearings. On Tuesday, during a House Armed Services Committee meeting, I asked Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin about President Biden's claims that the "tight" labor market was the culprit for our military's recruitment struggles. Under the Trump Administration, jobs were booming and there were no recruitment struggles. The culprit is clear: President Biden's unconstitutional vaccine mandates.

In a House Judiciary Committee meeting on Tuesday, my colleagues and I discussed the recent partisanship that plagues our federal law enforcement agencies. From 2016-2020, DOJ pushed witch hunts and pre-dawn raids on Trump officials, desperate to find evidence of foreign influence. They found nothing.

Since 2021, DOJ can't be bothered with such tactics, despite having ample evidence of foreign influence in Hunter Biden's laptop.

HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK

This week, I led over 40 of my colleagues in sending a letter to the Chief Administrative Officer of the U.S. House of Representatives demanding the House terminate its exclusive contract with Citigroup, following Citi's announcement that it will cover abortion-related expenses for their employees.

Simply put, Citi Bank has forfeited the privilege of doing business with Congress.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

This week, the Senate voted to confirm Ketanji Brown Jackson to the U.S. Supreme Court. There has been much discussion of her qualifications, experience, and her judicial philosophy, and the conclusion is clear: she is unfit for the nation's highest court.

She has given light sentences to child predators, was unable to define what a woman is, and denies the first self-evident truth in our Declaration of Independence: that all individuals are endowed with natural rights. I made this case Wednesday night on the House floor. Listen:

LAGNIAPPE

As the son of a firefighter, I know how much of a toll just one day on the job can take. But 50 years? That's a lifetime in itself!

Congratulations, Robert Perron, for this incredible milestone and for your career of faithful service to our community!
