Notes from Mike's Desk for the Week of May 16 - 20, 2022

IN THE HOUSE

Following the unprecedented leak of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito's draft opinion overturning Roe v. Wade, Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee called a hearing on Wednesday concerning "abortion access" in America. While this hearing was nothing more than a brazen attempt to further intimidate the Supreme Court, I used my allotted time to highlight the moral bankruptcy of the Democrat position on abortion. Before I was elected to Congress, I spent much of my career as a litigator defending the sanctity of human life in the courts. Even after all these years, the depravity of the other side never ceases to amaze me. These clips have gone viral because many people had never seen this depravity on display before. I think the reactions of the hosts on "Outnumbered" are shared by a lot of peopleā€¦

HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK

This week, the average price of gasoline reached another record high of $4.48 per gallon, and AAA expects the average gallon of gas to be more than $6 by August.

While the Administration and Congressional Democrats waste their time on meaningless messaging bills to counter "price gouging" from oil companies, I offer a different explanation, and a practical set of policy choices to get us out of this crisis. Watch:

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

As a legislator, oversight over the executive branch is a key function of my job - and one that can sometimes garner bipartisan consensus. That was the case Tuesday at a House Judiciary Committee hearing regarding the powers of the president to declare national emergencies.

There are currently more than 30 presidential declarations of "national emergencies" in effect, dating all the way back to Jimmy Carter's administration. The power to do this has been abused too often for partisan purposes and it is long past time for Congress to reclaim its authority.
